University Grand Commission – National Eligibility Test (UGC-NET) is a standardized entrance examination conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA). The examination takes place twice a year (commonly in June & December). The entrance is an eligibility criteria for Indian Nationals for admission to PhD, appoint aspirants for Assistant Professor, and Junior Research Fellowship (JRF)

Eligibility Criteria
The following are the eligibility criteria for the UGC-NET JRF examination:
- Master’s or equivalent degree from a UGC recognised institute with an aggregate of 55 % marks.
- The reserved categories, including OBC / NCL/ PwD / PwBD and third gender) should have not less than 50% aggregate without rounding off in their Master’s or equivalent degree from a UGC recognised institute.
- Aspirants in their final year can also apply for the examination. However, they need to ensure completing the eligibility criteria within two years from the date of the result.
- Candidates with a PhD degree holder and a master’s degree completed by 19th September 1991 shall be eligible with 5 percent relaxation.
- Aspirants who have completed graduation (4 years of 8 semesters) with at least 75 percentage and a 5% relaxation for reserved categories. The candidates who qualify for NET with this eligibility are eligible for JRF and PhD admission, and not for assistant professor.
- Candidates in the final year of graduation (four years or 8 semesters) can apply as well. However, they have to complete the eligibility criteria within two years of the date of the result.
- Age limitation – for JRF age limit is 30 years old, while for PhD admission and Assistant Professor, there is no upper age limit.
Note: The candidate with a complete or in the process of completing their graduation program can also apply regardless of any subject or discipline.
Exam Structure & Pattern
The UGC NET JRF entrance examination is an Objective type Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) with two parts:
- Part I: It consists of 50 questions for 100 marks. This is to assess teaching and research aptitude, which includes divergent thinking, reading comprehension, reasoning ability, and general awareness.
- Part II consists of 100 questions for 200 marks. This access aspirant’s subject knowledge.
- The mode is a computer-based test (CBT) with a medium of paper in Hindi or English.
- The duration of the exam is 180 minutes (3 hours) without any break between papers 1 & 2.
- Each question is worth 2 marks with no negative marking. No marks for unanswered/ unattempted or marked as reviewed questions.
Application Process
The aspirants for UGC NET JRF can apply for the entrance examination through online mode only. The following are the steps required to apply:
- Through NTA, the official website registers as a New candidate using your or your guardian’s mobile number and Email address.
- After completing registration, log in and fill in the demographic and qualification details required.
- Uploaded all the documents: recent photography and signature.
- Pay the application fee through online mode.
